Funderburk Appointed to UCLA Advisory Board on Lead Free Copper Based Alloys

June 24, 2011

The UCLA Sustainable Technology & Policy Program has appointed Bill Funderburk to an Advisory Board to review the methodology and findings of the program’s new study focused on the viability of commonly used copper-based alloys in potable water.

The research will consist of an alternative assessment that will compare lead and nonleaded alloys with respect to a number of physical properties, in addition to reviewing existing data on other properties. The California Metals Coalition has volunteered to provide resources as well as assistance with project coordination.

Studies on the chemical element lead have become increasingly relevant as President Obama signed into law S. 3874, a bill that lowers the lead content level of plumbing fixtures that carry drinking water from 8% to 0.25%. The law is effective starting January 2014.
